Danilo is a human rights lawyer working to bring economic and social rights to the most vulnerable communities and individuals in Serbia. He currently works as a Programme coordinator for A 11 - Initiative for Economic and Social Rights.
Prior to joining the A 11 Initiative, a Belgrade-based non-governmental organisation that works to bring economic and social rights to the most vulnerable population, Danilo worked in and with a number of NGOs and international organisations focusing on to the exercise of economic and social rights of marginalised groups, discrimination, and exclusion of vulnerable citizens.
Danilo’s main interests lie in the right to housing and the urban segregation of marginalised populations, systemic issues relevant to the enjoyment of economic and social rights, and the connections among economic, social, civil, and political rights. His other areas of interest include discrimination and the criminalisation of poverty and the effect of economic policies on the exercise of economic and social rights. He has written on human rights topics and issues for digital and traditional media.
He undertook bachelor studies in law at the University of Belgrade, and, as a Chevening Scholar, completed master’s studies in economic, social and cultural rights at the University of Essex.
If there is one thing I have learned through my work, it is that no single isolated approach can bring about the end of inequalities. Winning a case in courts cannot bring social change if it is not followed by a participatory struggle deeply entrenched in the needs of marginalised communities. Because of that, I believe that my strength lies in the fact my personal and professional engagement with inequalities is based on the participation of excluded groups I strive to work with. I believe we can successfully overcome obstacles only if every member of the community is provided with the same opportunities, if his or her needs and views are being respected, and if there is a joint urge for social change.Danilo Ćurčić
