George is a social change journalist, governance advocate, and media practitioner working at the intersection of journalism, civic engagement, and democratic accountability.
George's work focuses on how media and civic communication can strengthen public participation, institutional accountability, and inclusive development in contexts shaped by inequality and democratic fragility across Africa. With more than 13,000 hours of on-air experience, George has anchored influential socio-political programmes including The Discourse, Point of View, Political Voices, The People’s Assembly, and The Big Story, helping to shape public conversations on governance, elections, social justice, and citizen participation across Nigeria and beyond.
George has held senior broadcast leadership roles including Deputy Head of Station at Kiss FM Lagos, Head of Operations at Omega 101.7 FM, and News Team Lead at Radio Now 95.3 FM Lagos. In these positions, he has overseen newsroom operations, coordinated correspondents across Nigeria, and contributed to editorial strategy focused on governance, elections, and public-interest journalism.
George’s journalism focuses on governance accountability, civic participation, and institutional reform. His investigative reporting on illegal taxation in Anambra State drew public attention and prompted the government to temporarily suspend taxation, reinforcing his belief that journalism should function not only as a platform for information but also as a tool for accountability and social change.
Beyond journalism, George integrates broadcast media, theatre, and emerging technologies for civic education. In 2019, he produced a radio drama funded by the United States Mission in Nigeria on voter participation, translating democratic principles into accessible storytelling for everyday audiences. He also co-created Zuby and the Ballot, an AI-assisted civic education short film exploring voter apathy and political exclusion among young people while simplifying electoral laws for citizens.
As South-East Coordinator of the International Purpose Driven Youth Initiative (IPDYI), George has led and supported programmes advancing Sustainable Development Goals 1, 4, and 5. His civic education and mentorship initiatives have reached 25,000+ students and equipped 400+ at-risk young people with vocational and leadership skills across multiple Nigerian states. George has also contributed to election and governance initiatives in Nigeria. Working with YIAGA Africa, he served as an observer during Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election and anchored Ebonyi State’s first governorship town hall, promoting citizen-candidate dialogue and electoral transparency.
A Reuters-trained journalist on reporting trafficking and modern-day slavery, George serves as Joint Team Leader for Turning the Tide, a media and advocacy campaign addressing trafficking and exploitation across Africa through reporting and public awareness initiatives. As a 2026 Stanford Fisher Family Summer Fellow, George holds a BA in Theatre and Film Studies from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and a Certificate in Public Leadership and Policy from the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG). Through his work, George remains committed to advancing accountable governance, strengthening civic participation, and expanding inclusive development across Africa.
Growing up in poverty and exclusion, I saw how lack of information and representation keeps people powerless. What inspires me is seeing marginalized communities find their voice and confidence through dialogue and access to credible information. Through radio and civic engagement programmes, I have watched people move from silence and frustration to questioning authority, demanding accountability, and participating in governance. Those moments remind me that sustainable change begins when people believe their voices matter and can influence systems around them.George Onuorah
