AFSEE hosts a Leadership Summit to celebrate its five-year anniversary

Mar 28, 2023

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) programme welcomed back its Senior Fellows (alumni) to the London School of Economics and Political Science to connect, reconnect, and re-energise at the inaugural AFSEE Leadership Summit that took place from Friday 13 January until Sunday 15 January 2023.

The Leadership Summit celebrated AFSEE’s five-year anniversary by bringing together the programme’s first five cohorts. The summit was attended by AFSEE Staff, members of the AFSEE Governing Board, and over 60 Fellows from all over the world and across cohorts.

As we mark the fifth anniversary of the start of the fellowship at the AFSEE Leadership Summit, we pause to reflect on how far we have come in building this community of global social change leaders. The AFSEE Leadership Summit was an opportunity to not only take stock of how far we have come but also to look to the future and consider where it is that we want to go. The journey has only just begun, and by looking at the state of the world today, it is clear how much further we must travel to create a world that is healthier, fairer, and more inclusive than the one we have at present.

The summit was opened with remarks from AFSEE Executive Director, Dr Armine Ishkanian; President and CEO of Atlantic Philanthropies, Chris Oechsli; LSE Director, Baroness Minouche Shafik, Chair of the AFSEE Governing Board, Dr Claire Gordon; and AFSEE Senior Fellows Representative on the AFSEE Governing Board, Saida Ali.

The programme for the Summit was designed with and for Fellows to encourage cross-cohort connections and knowledge sharing. During the three days of the Summit, attendees took part in fellow-led skills-sharing sessions and fireside chats; a workshop exploring the potential of academic-practitioner collaborations for social change; a plenary discussion on the successes and failures in social and economic equities; and an interactive Keynote Lecture on leadership led by Dr Aarti Anhal.
