Innovation and Equity for E-Participation in South Africa

This project explored the potential of digital participation tools to enhance public engagement in local governance. By focusing on South Africa’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) process, the project examined the barriers and opportunities for technology-driven citizen participation while fostering discussions on responsible and inclusive digital governance.

Objectives

  • Understand structural constraints and inequalities that impact e-participation in South Africa.
  • Assess the potential of digital tools to support meaningful civic engagement in governance processes.
  • Identify feasible e-participation initiatives suited to the local context.
  • Develop a shared vision and plan for responsible digital participation.
