Laura Roth is a feminist researcher and activist based in the Basque Country. Her work focuses on radical organising and feminist ways of doing activism, but also on citizen participation and care. She holds a PhD from Universitat Pompeu Fabra and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona where she investigates the democratic theory and practice of radical municipalism. In the past, she has been a researcher at Pompeu Fabra University, Harvard University, Radboud University, Goethe Universität Frankfurt, and University of Stirling, among others. Since 2008 he has also been teaching political and legal theory.
She was born and raised in Argentina and later lived in Barcelona for over a decade. As an activist at Barcelona en Comú, she co-founded the international Fearless Cities network, the Feminisation of Politics network, and the Minim municipalist observatory. For over a decade, she has travelled the world investigating, teaching, and advocating for radical municipalism and feminist ways of doing politics. She has published many academic and non-academic texts, including the 'Feminise Politics Now!' handbook with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, which was translated into several languages.
Laura has also worked as a consultant for numerous organisations and institutions, including the European Commission, Barcelona City Council, Decidim, Guerrilla Foundation, OSIFE, United Cities and Local Governments, Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, and FundAction. She has supported them with the design of participatory processes, internal restructuring, and the implementation of feminist organising practices.
She is currently interested in how a Feminist Care Ethics can be applied to social movements and organisations, with the aim of making them more resilient by focusing on interdependence and relationships instead of merely on justice and outputs. Among other issues, she wants to challenge the way in which care responsibilities are assigned and distributed in political organisations and institutions. She is also focused on the role of spiritual practice in increasing awareness and allowing activists to become more insightful when aiming at systemic change.
I am inspired by those who can lead from a place of love and understanding. People who do not need to convince or impose ideas on others. I am also inspired by those who can hold communities and groups and make everyone feel part of the same whole.Laura Roth
