Exploring women’s invisibilised labour through art

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) programme collaborated with AFSEE Senior Fellow Roos Saalbrink to showcase her research at the LSE Festival 2024 that took place from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 June 2024. This year’s Festival explored how power and politics shape our world.

During the Festival week, Roos’ work on women’s invisibilised labour was displayed at the London School of Economics and Political Science as part of the Displays of Power – exhibition. The display showcased visual and written artwork from the artbook SEEN, which Roos, as part of the AFSEE Fellowship, created together with five feminist artists Aida Namukose, Clariss Rufaro Masiya, Halina Rauber-Baio aka Juno Algaravia, Kashushu, and Olusayo ‘ajet’ Ajetunmobi to record global herstories, challenging the current global social-economic system of oppression and exploitation of women. The display was also accompanied by a short audio explainer, available to listen here.

During the Festival week, Roos also led an interactive workshop at the Feminist Library in Peckham, London, which is a library and community space that supports feminist research, activists, and community projects.

For the workshop, Roos was joined virtually by two of the artists who co-created the artbook Juno Algaravia and Clariss Rufaro Masiya, as well as London-based artist and activist Raju Rage. Together they explored feminist critiques of women’s invisibilised labour through conversation, visual art, poetry, and reflective exercise.
